Lynette : don't touch my bike!

I've been biking for as long as I can remember. Something about the freedom it gave me has always appealed to me. But there are Bad People in the world, and this rant is against Bike Thieves, those lowest of the low who steal our Steed! My Bike isn't just some department store clunker. a lot of customization and love has gone into making it what it is today. And I haven't had a bike stolen (successfully) for 10 years. I think this has something to do with locking properly and a whole lot of good karma.

Locking Your Bike
For a U-lock, find a post securely mounted in cement. Parking Meters in Toronto and Montreal are particularly good for this.It should be large enough to fill the inner space of the lock so a thief can't get enough leverage to force the lock open . Be certain the bike and lock can't be lifted over the top of the post.

For maximum security, remove the front wheel and use the U-lock to encircle the post, frame, and the front and rear rims.

I reccomend the Stocks Lock (made in hamilton, w ith flexible steel cables on the U-bar. The Evolution 2000 series from Kryptonite is also quite good. Retrofit any lesser locks with a Plumbers-T which are available in any hardware store and prevent the pipe method. Or do what I did, get a thin wedge of steel welded on your U-bar preventing a pipe over the locking mechanism and its only 60g's instead of 600!
